Standing with Georgian Civil Society for Democracy and European Aspirations
We are deeply concerned by escalating restrictions on fundamental freedoms, including reports of violence, arbitrary detentions, and the targeting of civil society, journalists, and activists. Such actions threaten the democratic foundations essential to Georgia's European path.
At this critical moment, we:
- Support Georgian civil society, protesters, and all citizens united in their demand for democratic governance and alignment with European values.
- Commend the courage of individuals within the government and public institutions who continue to uphold the European course despite political pressure.
- Call for a rerun of parliamentary elections under international supervision to guarantee transparency and fairness.
- Welcome the EU’s decision to redirect funds from the government to civil society and encourage further measures to empower democratic actors.
We call on:
- Georgian authorities to end violence against peaceful protesters, safeguard fundamental freedoms, and address all reported abuses.
- The EU and the international community to increase targeted support for civil society and hold accountable those responsible for electoral fraud, repression, and human rights violations.
- Donors and partners to prioritize financial and technical aid for human rights defenders, independent media, and democratic initiatives to strengthen societal resilience.
Georgia’s European aspirations remain a beacon of hope. It is essential that the international community stands firmly with the Georgian people as they strive to protect democracy and pursue a future rooted in European values.
The Swedish Eastern Partnership Network reaffirms its commitment to amplifying the voices of the Georgian people and supporting their journey toward a democratic European future.
