According to data collected by Femicide Count Kenya, at least 10 women were killed in January alone and 504 women between 2019 and 2024. In January, ForumCiv in Kenya joined a collective of feminist movements, human rights activists, concerned citizens, and civil society organizations in the country for an #EndFemicide march. The country-wide marches were a call to stop the alarming rate of femicide in Kenya and demand justice for the victims.
This action organized by a collective of feminist movements in Kenya, with the support of ForumCiv’s Regional Office in Eastern and Southern Africa among others, has resulted in the following:
- The formation of a special team to investigate femicides.
- The opening of a femicide hotline.
- Petitions were submitted to the National Assembly and County Assemblies across the country to ensure legislation favouring an end to femicide.
- The Chief Justice of Kenya, Martha Koome, committed to rolling out trauma-informed sexual and gender-based violence courts.
