From bystanders to decision-makers in Armenia
Challenges for women in Armenia
In Armenia, women face numerous barriers to participating in public life, especially in political contexts. Stereotypical gender roles and discrimination often keep women out of decision-making positions. SILC and Sose have collaborated to change these structures through training, workshops, and support for women aiming to engage in politics.
The power of education and mentorship
Through the project’s training sessions, women have gained tools to identify and solve community issues. Participants have learned skills such as advocacy and using digital platforms like Armenia’s E-Draft to influence the legislative process. These initiatives have led to tangible successes, including improved infrastructure and increased civic engagement in local decision-making.
Successes in political participation
One major success is the growing representation of women in politics. While women accounted for only 6% of Armenia’s National Assembly in 1995, the percentage rose to 34% by 2023. As part of the project, five women have been elected to municipal councils, including Armenia’s youngest council member, who inspires other young women to follow in her footsteps.
A future where women lead
The partnership has not only empowered women but also given them the courage to dream big. Many participants now envision futures as political leaders, from municipal councils to the National Assembly. One young woman from the project shared her dream of becoming the mayor of her village to challenge the gender norms that still shape her community.
Long-term impact and increased transparency
The partnership between SILC and Sose has also improved transparency in the organization’s work, building greater trust among donors. By combining local engagement with support from international partners, the project has laid the foundation for a more gender-equal future in Armenia.
The project was funded by ForumCiv’s Swedish Partnership Programme and serves as an example of how strategic collaboration can create sustainable societal change.
Through the Swedish Partnership Program, Swedish organizations, together with one or more local partner organizations, can apply for grants from with the aim of building partnerships and working together for effective and fair development work.
