Statement by the Eastern Partnership Network on Belarus’ Illegitimate Presidential Election
This orchestrated event, marked by systemic violations of democratic norms, occurred under an atmosphere of fear, repression, and total regime control. The election is part of an ongoing trend of fraudulent practices, further reinforcing Alexander Lukashenka’s autocratic rule since 1994, now extending into an unprecedented seventh term.
The election lacked all conditions for legitimacy: no independent media, judiciary, or political competition, with the process entirely controlled by the regime. Political repression, arbitrary arrests, and silencing of opposition voices have dismantled any semblance of democracy. Over 1,200 political prisoners remain detained, including prominent opposition figures. The regime also blocked an estimated 500,000 Belarusian citizens living abroad from voting by closing polling stations in embassies and consulates. The absence of independent observers and the pervasive climate of fear further highlight that the electoral process was rigged from the outset.
Despite severe repression, the resilience of the Belarusian people in their pursuit of freedom and democracy is unwavering.
In line with democratic principles and international resolutions, we call on the EU, its Member States, and the broader international community to:
- Condemn and reject the illegitimate results of this sham election and the continued autocratic rule of Alexander Lukashenka.
- Denounce ongoing repression of civil society, independent media, and political opponents.
- Strengthen support for Belarusian democratic forces, civil society, and human rights defenders both within the country and in exile.
- Demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners and provide assistance to their families and rehabilitation efforts.
- Advance strategies for Belarus' democratic transformation, including targeted sanctions against the regime without isolating its citizens.
Belarus' complicity in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine further underscores the urgency of a unified international response. The global community must act decisively to hold Lukashenka accountable and support the Belarusian people’s aspirations for democracy and sovereignty.
The Swedish EaP Network stands in solidarity with the people of Belarus and reaffirms its commitment to upholding their right to freedom, democracy, and self-determination.
The Eastern Partnership Network consists of 37 Swedish civil society organizations dedicated to strengthening cooperation with civil society in Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine). We promote democracy, human rights, and sustainable development throughout the region.
